Japan’s Heatwave Spurs Economic Shifts, Ninth Consecutive Year Over 40°C

Date:

On July 21, Japan endured a blistering heatwave as temperatures soared past 40°C in multiple regions, driven by a robust high-pressure system. This marked the ninth consecutive year such extreme temperatures have been recorded, drawing attention to the persistence of intense summer heat in the country.

This year’s unprecedented heat comes following the recent introduction of the term “kokushobi,” or “cruelly hot days,” by Japanese authorities in April to categorize days when the mercury hits 40°C or higher. It was the first time this term was applicable, as temperatures reached such levels for the first time since its adoption.

The city of Tajimi, situated in Gifu Prefecture, bore the brunt of the heatwave, recording the highest temperature of the day at 40.3°C. Not far behind, Gujo, also in Gifu, matched a scorching 40°C, while Toyota in Aichi Prefecture saw temperatures peak at 40.1°C. These figures illustrate the breadth of the heat’s impact across the nation.

By the middle of the afternoon, a notable 255 out of 914 weather observation stations across Japan reported temperatures of at least 35°C, underscoring the severity of the heatwave that swept through both eastern and western regions. This widespread impact prompted significant concern among residents and authorities alike.

In light of these sweltering conditions, the Environment Ministry and the Japan Meteorological Agency issued heatstroke alerts for 42 prefectures, the most extensive alert issued this year. Officials have strongly advised the public to take precautions such as using air conditioning, staying hydrated, and maintaining salt levels to prevent heat-related illnesses.
