Vietnam and Japan have taken steps to enhance their defence cooperation, focusing on several strategic areas such as military training, cybersecurity, and defence industry development. These discussions were held during a meeting in Hanoi between Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence, General Phan Văn Giang, and General Uchikura Hiroaki, Chief of Staff of Japan’s Self-Defence Forces. Both leaders explored ways to bolster bilateral defence ties and improve the implementation of existing cooperation agreements.

General Giang underscored Vietnam’s dedication to advancing consultation and dialogue mechanisms with Japan. He stressed the importance of expanding cooperation among military branches and fostering collaboration in defence technology, military medicine, and cybersecurity. The minister also highlighted the significance of defence relations as a key component of the broader Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two nations.

Japan’s contribution to Vietnam’s defence sector has been substantial, particularly in personnel training, defence industry development, and technology transfer. Additionally, Japan has supported Vietnam’s post-war recovery initiatives. General Giang expressed interest in expanding scholarship and training opportunities for Vietnamese defence personnel, especially in the fields of science, engineering, and technology.

Japan is recognized as one of Vietnam’s major economic and strategic allies, with strong ties in areas such as trade, investment, development assistance, and labour exchanges. The defence relationship between the two countries has also grown significantly, supported by regular policy dialogues and military consultations. General Uchikura reiterated Japan’s commitment to strengthening defence collaboration with Vietnam, expressing support for increased cooperation in high-level exchanges, military education, cybersecurity, and healthcare services within the armed forces.

Both nations agreed on the importance of maintaining close coordination to further build mutual trust and ensure regional stability. Their shared goal is to enhance long-term strategic cooperation, reinforcing the solid foundation of their partnership.
