Live-Action Moana Targets Gen Alpha, Highlights Economic Shift in Disney Strategy

Date:

The live-action adaptation of Disney’s Moana reinvigorates the beloved animated tale with a contemporary twist, reimagining its protagonist as a fierce warrior rather than a conventional princess. This new version aims to engage today’s audiences by emphasizing themes of bravery, kindness, and cultural identity. The film’s narrative is designed to resonate with viewers by highlighting the importance of courage and self-discovery within a rich Polynesian cultural context.

Dwayne Johnson returns to his role as the demigod Maui, a character he first brought to life in the 2016 animated film. As a producer and actor in the live-action project, Johnson describes Moana as embodying the spirit of a warrior, rather than a traditional princess figure. He emphasized that the film’s themes of community and cultural heritage are universally appealing, striking a chord with audiences of all ages and backgrounds.

Introducing a new face to the cinematic landscape, 19-year-old Catherine Lagaʻaia takes on the title role of Moana. Lagaʻaia, who hails from Australia and is of Samoan descent, was chosen from a pool of over 32,000 aspiring actors through an extensive audition process. Her casting brings an authentic connection to the character and her cultural roots, making her portrayal both genuine and relatable.

Reflecting on her journey, LagaÊ»aia shared that playing Moana has been a transformative experience, allowing her personal growth. She admires the character for her compassion and empathy, particularly noting Moana’s tendency to choose understanding over anger during challenging times. These qualities, she says, have had a profound impact on her own outlook.

The film, with its focus on resilience, empathy, and staying true to one’s identity, seeks to captivate Gen Alpha while remaining faithful to the original story’s essence. Moana was released in India in both English and Hindi on July 10, aiming to reach a broad and diverse audience.
