Wall Street’s major stock indices closed with mixed results on Monday as investors grappled with the implications of rising oil prices and losses in the technology sector. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite both experienced declines, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average managed to post gains. Despite the uneven performance, the indices remained near their recent record highs.
The S&P 500 edged down 0.1% to 7,807.24, and the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.4% to 27,245.90. Conversely, the Dow Jones Industrial Average increased by 0.4%, closing at 51,850.55. Within the market, communication services and energy stocks provided some support. Meta Platforms saw a 3.4% rise, and Chevron climbed 1.4% amid the broader market fluctuations.
However, the technology sector faced challenges as key players like Micron Technology, Advanced Micro Devices, Broadcom, and Nvidia posted losses of 3.9%, 2.3%, 1.9%, and 1.3%, respectively. Investors are particularly focused on evaluating corporate earnings to determine if the ongoing artificial intelligence boom will yield sustained revenue and profit growth.
The surge in oil prices added another layer of complexity, with Brent crude rising 1.8% to settle at $106.65 per barrel. This increase is partly attributed to uncertainties surrounding the conflict involving the United States and Iran, raising concerns about global energy supplies. The higher energy costs have sparked worries about inflation, consumer spending, and transportation expenses.
Looking ahead, investors are preparing for key U.S. economic reports on consumer inflation, producer prices, and retail sales, which could shape expectations for future Federal Reserve interest-rate decisions. Rising borrowing costs have already exerted pressure on the housing market, while major banks are on track to report their quarterly earnings this week.
Globally, European markets saw advancements, whereas most Asian markets experienced declines. Market participants remain vigilant about whether corporate earnings, inflation trends, and energy prices will continue to support the stock market’s recent upward trajectory.
