Japan Engages China, Russia on Economic Cooperation at ASEAN Summit

Date:

In an effort to navigate diplomatic complexities, Japan’s Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi engaged in brief interactions with his Chinese and Russian counterparts during the ASEAN summit in Manila. This initiative reflects Japan’s cautious approach towards easing tensions with both countries amid ongoing regional issues.

During the summit, Motegi and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi exchanged informal remarks about their nations’ bilateral relations. Motegi emphasized the significance of maintaining dialogue to ensure regional stability. However, the Chinese side refuted claims of any formal meeting or planned interaction between the two officials, highlighting the sensitive nature of their diplomatic interactions.

Additionally, the Japanese foreign minister had a brief conversation with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. This encounter marks the first recorded dialogue between the top diplomats of Japan and Russia since the latter’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. The discussion covered bilateral relations and pertinent regional matters, signaling Japan’s openness to communication despite existing geopolitical tensions.

Japan remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting Ukraine and retaining sanctions against Russia, despite these renewed diplomatic engagements. Analysts have observed that while maintaining dialogue with both China and Russia is crucial for addressing bilateral issues, Japan must carefully balance these interactions to ensure they do not compromise its international obligations and alliances.
