In a bid to enhance diplomatic ties, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi met with Solomon Islands Prime Minister Matthew Wale in Tokyo. This meeting marks an effort to strengthen bilateral relations amidst recent shifts in the Solomon Islands’ foreign policy landscape under its new administration. The two leaders committed to expanding development cooperation, which includes a provision of 3 billion yen (about $18.3 million) in yen loans, and emphasized the importance of fostering people-to-people exchanges.
Prime Minister Takaichi expressed Japan’s intention to cultivate a “strong and prosperous cooperative relationship” with the Solomon Islands, grounded in mutual values such as freedom, democracy, the rule of law, and human rights. Prime Minister Wale expressed appreciation for Japan’s support, acknowledging the need for assistance as Pacific island nations grapple with various economic and development hurdles.
This meeting follows a notable shift in the Solomon Islands’ foreign policy. In 2019, the nation transitioned its diplomatic allegiance from Taiwan to China and subsequently signed a security agreement with Beijing in 2022. This pact allowed Chinese naval access to its ports and the operation of Chinese security personnel within the country, raising apprehensions among regional allies about China’s expanding strategic influence in the Pacific region.
Since assuming office in May 2026, Prime Minister Wale has indicated a change in foreign policy direction. He has committed to reassessing the security agreement with China and has been vocal in his criticism of Beijing’s recent submarine-launched ballistic missile test in the Pacific. Furthermore, Wale has prioritized strengthening relations with traditional partners, evidenced by his visits to Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and Japan.
For Japan, bolstering relations with the Solomon Islands aligns with its broader strategy of promoting a Free and Open Indo-Pacific, which emphasizes regional stability, security, and cooperation. As a gesture of goodwill, Prime Minister Takaichi presented Wale with a football from the Nara Prefectural Football Association, a nod to the sport’s popularity in the Solomon Islands and Takaichi’s own connections to Nara Prefecture.
