The mockery began early. When Horizon Worlds launched, screenshots and videos of its low-fidelity avatars floating in sparse virtual environments circulated widely across social media platforms. The contrast between the sweeping vision Zuckerberg had articulated and the product that appeared on screen was striking enough to generate immediate ridicule. The shutdown announcement generated another wave of commentary. Users noted that the platform’s few hundred thousand users represented a tiny fraction of Meta’s audience, and that the closure would affect almost no one in any meaningful way. “All five users are reportedly devastated,” as one widely shared post put it — a joke that condensed years of failure into a single sentence.

The social media mockery, while entertaining, reflects something serious: the public’s ability to identify the gap between corporate ambition and commercial reality, and its willingness to express that identification with humor.
