Japan Defense Ministry to Integrate Startups in New Procurement System

Date:

Japan’s Defense Ministry is set to introduce a new procurement system aimed at integrating advanced technologies from startups into defense equipment, as announced by Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi. This initiative seeks to boost participation from startups in the defense sector by providing upfront funding for the development of innovative technologies such as drones and artificial intelligence, which are crucial for modern warfare.

The initiative will initially focus on inviting proposals for low-cost, mass-producible small attack drones and related equipment for the Ground Self-Defense Force and the Maritime Self-Defense Force. Emphasizing the use of domestically produced components, the ministry plans to select multiple promising companies at the concept stage, narrowing the candidates through prototype development and testing.

Additionally, the ministry is interested in technologies that can enhance warehouse management and reduce staffing requirements, as well as equipment designed to mitigate aircraft noise and improve working conditions for Air Self-Defense Force personnel.

The first round of proposal applications will open on October 2. The Defense Ministry anticipates that this new system will accelerate the adoption of innovative technologies, thereby strengthening Japan’s defense capabilities.
