India-Japan Strengthen Economic Collaboration Through Enhanced Investment and Technology Exchange

Date:

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal recently wrapped up a four-day trip to Japan, underscoring a burgeoning interest from Japanese enterprises to boost investment and forge technology partnerships with India. During his visit, Goyal was accompanied by a sizable business delegation comprising nearly 200 representatives. The agenda included meetings with Japanese firms involved in various sectors, including robotics, semiconductors, electronics, renewable energy, and advanced manufacturing.

Goyal revealed that discussions during the trip have already started yielding potential investment prospects. Notably, a Japanese robotics company has identified an Indian partner to collaborate with, setting the stage to potentially manufacture robotics technology on Indian soil. This move is part of a broader strategy to increase the presence of Japanese businesses in India. Currently, around 1,500 Japanese companies operate in India, and the aim is to significantly increase their investment in emerging industries within the country.

Another focal point of the visit was the initiation of talks to review the India-Japan Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement. These discussions are aimed at addressing regulatory challenges and enhancing business-to-business cooperation between the two nations. The goal is to facilitate smoother and more extensive economic exchanges, removing barriers that currently hinder the full potential of bilateral trade.

India and Japan are setting their sights on fortified trade and investment relationships, with a shared objective of elevating bilateral trade to $27.47 billion by the fiscal year 2025-26. Looking further ahead, both countries are committed to reaching a long-term target of $50 billion in trade by 2030. These ambitious goals reflect a mutual interest in deepening economic ties and exploring new areas of collaboration.
