Japan Raises Concerns Over Economic Impact of China’s Chipmaking Chemical Restrictions

Date:

In a recent development, Japan has voiced its opposition to China’s new export restrictions on dichlorosilane (DCS), a crucial chemical in semiconductor manufacturing. The Japanese government is currently evaluating the potential repercussions these measures could have on its businesses. Under the new regulations, Chinese importers are required to place cash deposits of up to 99.2% for DCS imported from Japan, impacting major Japanese manufacturers such as Shin-Etsu Chemical and Denal Silane.

The Chinese government claims that these restrictions are temporary and were initiated following an anti-dumping investigation. According to Chinese authorities, Japanese DCS exports have adversely affected their domestic industry. The final outcome of the investigation will determine whether these provisional measures become permanent or are lifted.

Amidst these tensions, the Japanese government has called on China to ensure that its actions do not unfairly harm Japanese businesses. Tokyo has expressed readiness to take necessary steps should the situation require further intervention. This latest dispute is set against a backdrop of strained China-Japan relations, particularly concerning Japan’s stance on Taiwan. In addition to the DCS restrictions, Beijing has also imposed other trade and export limitations affecting Japanese entities and products with potential military applications.

DCS plays a pivotal role in the semiconductor industry, used specifically to deposit ultra-thin layers of silicon and other materials onto computer chips. Given Japan’s status as a leading global producer of ultrapure DCS, the new Chinese export restrictions could have significant ramifications for the semiconductor supply chain worldwide.
