Trump Calls Iran’s Attack on Dubai Financial Hub a Declaration of Economic War

Date:

President Donald Trump declared that Iran’s strike on the Dubai International Financial Centre constituted a declaration of economic war against the global financial system on Friday, as he called Iranian leaders “deranged scumbags” and promised devastating military consequences. A building at the prestigious DIFC — home to hundreds of international banks, wealth managers, and capital traders — sustained damage when debris from an intercepted Iranian projectile struck it. Iran had earlier in the week threatened to target banks and financial institutions across the Gulf, making the Dubai strike a fulfillment of that declared intention.

The International Financial Centre is one of the most significant financial hubs in the world outside of New York, London, and Singapore. Its role as the financial gateway for much of the Middle East, South Asia, and Africa makes any attack on it a matter of global financial concern. Iran’s stated policy of targeting financial infrastructure across the Gulf added a new dimension to a conflict that had already disrupted global energy supplies through the effective blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. Saudi Arabia, meanwhile, intercepted close to 50 Iranian drones fired in multiple coordinated waves on Friday.

The military campaign against Iran itself continued at extraordinary pace. Combined US and Israeli forces have struck over 15,000 targets since the war began. Israel alone reported over 200 individual strikes in the most recent 24-hour window. Trump announced that US Central Command had obliterated every military facility on Kharg Island, Iran’s primary oil terminal, in one of the most powerful bombing raids in Middle Eastern history. He threatened to strike the island’s oil infrastructure next if Iran continued to disrupt Strait of Hormuz shipping. Defence Secretary Hegseth described Iran’s leadership as wounded, hiding, and desperate.

The conflict continued to take lives across the region. Iran has reported over 1,300 deaths. Lebanon has counted over 600 killed and 800,000 displaced, with eight more dying in Sidon Friday. Israel reports 12 deaths. Thirteen US service members have died, including six in a tanker aircraft crash in Iraq. France lost a soldier to a pro-Iranian militia drone in Iraq. Hezbollah injured about 60 Israelis in rocket salvoes at northern Israel. Qatar ordered Doha evacuations before a missile interception. Two died in Oman in drone crashes.

Tehran residents described near-constant bombardment, power cuts, fuel shortages, and trapped civilians. A retired professor begged the world to intervene. A shopkeeper counted six explosions in one hour. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards launched new coordinated strikes on Israel with Hezbollah as part of al-Quds Day. Iran’s new supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei was described as wounded, disfigured, and hiding underground by US officials. European governments sought diplomatic back-channels with Tehran for Strait of Hormuz commercial shipping safety, hoping to carve out some economic stability from an increasingly catastrophic and multi-dimensional conflict.
